Ghana begins sixth IMF review as Finance Minister highlights economic recovery gains
Ghana has commenced the sixth review of its programme with the International Monetary Fund under the Extended Credit Facility, with government expressing confidence in the progress made so far.
The Minister for Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, welcomed the IMF mission team led by Ruben Atoyan to Accra, describing the partnership as transformative in stabilising the country’s economy.
Reflecting on Ghana’s recovery since the 2022 economic crisis, the Minister said the programme has helped restore macroeconomic stability, rebuild credibility, and renew confidence among citizens and investors.
“This has been a long and demanding journey, but the progress we have made together is significant,” he said, noting that the gains are the result of disciplined policy decisions taken in the national interest.
Dr. Forson, however, cautioned against complacency, pointing to youth unemployment as a major challenge that requires urgent attention.
He emphasised the need to create an enabling environment for private sector growth to absorb the country’s growing youthful workforce, warning that failure to do so could place unsustainable pressure on the state.
The Finance Minister outlined government’s next steps, which include advancing reforms aimed at strengthening policy credibility, enforcing fiscal discipline, and boosting investor confidence.
He added that the ultimate goal is to translate economic stability into tangible benefits such as increased investment, job creation, and improved living standards.
The IMF team, he noted, acknowledged Ghana’s progress and described the current phase of the programme as a significant milestone, crediting the government’s efforts in implementing reforms.
The ongoing review is expected to inform key decisions on the next phase of Ghana’s economic reform agenda as authorities seek to consolidate gains and drive long-term growth.
